Bellringers

TowerBellringing is an ancient British art that can be learnt by any one from school children to the retired.   At St. George’s you do need to be able to climb the 82 steps to the room from which the bells are rung, the Ringing Chamber.   We always welcome visitors on a Monday evening; come and see what goes on up the tower and have a go!

For further details contact the Secretary:

Ann Mayes - 0161 485 6477,

or email; bellringers@stgeorgestockport.org.uk

St George's has 10 bells, the heaviest being 30 cwt.   There is an active band of bellringers who ring for the 10.15 Service on Sundays, for weddings and other special occasions.   We practice on Monday evenings from 7.45 – 9.00 p.m. followed by liquid refreshment at a local hostelry.

Bellringing is a social activity and most bellringers are members of their local church ‘band’.   Bands are affiliated to regional or diocesan organisations.   Social activities vary from joining other towers on their practice night (visitors are always welcomed) to day trips ringing at churches further afield, bellringing holidays within the UK and abroad and also non-ringing events such as quiz nights and barbecues.   We also have our own weekly magazine, The Ringing World.
